Kennesaw State University launches new Women's Leadership Center
Former Cosmo editor inspires businesswomen to “be gutsy” in their jobs during kickoff event
KENNESAW, Ga. (March 28, 2013) — Former Cosmopolitan editor Kate White helped launch the new Women’s Leadership Center in the Michael J. Coles College of Business at Kennesaw State University, during an inaugural event addressing more than 500 metro Atlanta business women.
“We let our inner voice tell us that our ideas are too bold or not realistic when really they are inspiring and going in the right direction,” White told the women gathered for the Women’s Leadership Center launch at the Georgia Aquarium. “Stop worrying whether people will like you. We let the need to feel popular get in the way of doing the job and our success. You need to be the bossy pants in your personal life, too.”
The new center at Kennesaw State will give women business leaders the opportunity to explore real-life strategies to push innovation and share best practices about gender and leadership in the workplace. It is designed to foster the advancement of women in today’s workplace. The center will help women business leaders achieve higher levels in their careers at corporations, universities, nonprofit organizations, and as entrepreneurs.
“At the Michael J. Coles College of Business, we strive to develop leaders who will have a positive impact on business and society for decades to come,” said Kathy Schwaig, dean of the college.
The Women’s Leadership Center provides research and tailored education, with programs in leadership strategies for professional women, women in higher education and women entrepreneurs. The center has been actively engaged in providing community service to the Professional Women’s Alliance (PWA), a group of corporate women’s affinity and employee resource groups from top companies.
“Unlike other women’s centers, the Women’s Leadership Center focuses strictly on women and leadership in the workplace,” said Erin Wolf, the center’s executive director. “We promote research, education and community involvement related to that.” The center currently offers executive roundtables and other events where PWA leaders collaborate to share new ideas, thought leadership and best practices in order to increase representation and retention of women in leadership positions within their organizations.
As the center’s executive director, Wolf also teaches strategy and leadership classes in the college’s Executive MBA program. She is a nationally recognized speaker, executive coach and consultant in the areas of leadership development for women, organizational change and organizational strategy. She has published two books since 2009, “Lessons from the Trenches: A Woman’s Guide to Winning the Corporate Game” and “If I Knew Then What I Know Now: Secrets to Success from Top Women Leaders.”
