Kennesaw State to host U.N. Assistant Secretary-General Sally Fegan-Wyles

Keynote talk on gender equality to highlight meeting of training center leaders from nine countries

KENNESAW, Ga. (Nov. 4, 2013) — United Nations Assistant Secretary-General Sally Fegan-Wyles will discuss the role of gender equality in planning worldwide development goals during a forum at Kennesaw State UniversityFriday, Nov. 8.  Her keynote address will focus on improving the status of women in the years after the U.N.’s 2015 deadline for achieving its Millennium Development Goals.

What:

Fegan-Wyles’ talk is presented in conjunction with a two-day meeting of the CIFAL Global NetworkSteering Committee, which represents a network of United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) centers around the globe.  CIFAL Atlanta moved its offices to Kennesaw State in 2012 and entered an agreement to jointly provide training programs for leaders from around the world, creating the first and only U.N. CIFAL training center worldwide hosted by a university.

 Who:

  • Fegan-Wyles has more than 30 years of experience within the United Nations system and currently serves as executive director of UNITAR.  She previously served as senior adviser on system-wide coherence in the Office of the U.N. Deputy Secretary-General, where she led the inter-agency team that prepared the blueprint for the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UN-Women).  She also led the team that established the process to merge the U.N.’s four constituent departments, institutions and programs dealing with the issue of gender equality and the empowerment of women.
  • Directors of CIFAL centers in nine countriesare expected to attend along with leaders of Atlanta-based consulates and the Institute for Global Initiatives at Kennesaw State University.
