Lockheed Martin supports Kennesaw State University scholarships

Company’s gift targets students in the sciences

KENNESAW, Ga. (October 22, 2013) — Lockheed Martin has contributed to the endowed  Wilkes/Burnett Black Alumni Society Scholarship fund at Kennesaw State University, which supports students interested in the sciences.

The merit-based scholarship is awarded to deserving undergraduate students majoring in the sciences or those who have declared themselves “pre-med.”  It is named for Drs. Shelby Wilkes and Jettie Burnett, who established the scholarship to commemorate the founding of the Kennesaw State University Black Alumni Society.  As the Society’s first president, Wilkes was motivated to see the organization become directly involved in assisting students.

Shan Cooper, general manager of Marietta-based Lockheed Martin, presented the $5,000 check Oct. 18 in the boardroom of Kennesaw State University President Daniel S. Papp. Other attendees included Hamilton Holmes, Lockheed Martin community relations manager; Michael Harders, vice president for University Advancement and Development; and Mark Anderson, dean of the University’s College of Science and Mathematics.

“Dr. Papp is doing a tremendous job of building KSU’s capacity to make an impact on producing future STEM [science, technology, engineering and math]-focused employees and educators,” said.  “We at Lockheed Martin feel it’s important to support KSU’s efforts because of our potential need to hire hundreds of employees with STEM studies and experiences over the coming decades.  We will continue to partner with the University as it moves forward with plans to expand its STEM focus on campus.”

As part of its efforts to educate and inspire tomorrow’s scientists, engineers and mathematicians, Lockheed Martin’s approach to STEM outreach includes support for programs, events and campaigns that focus on student achievement, teacher development, and gender and ethnic diversity. A strong supporter of Kennesaw State University for 30 years, Lockheed Martin’s gifts have supported scholarships for science, leadership development programs, business and accounting.
